and so, its over. its sad to see how the US of A condones murder. the self-proclaimed leader of the free world, whose 35th president, the late John Fitzgerald Kennendy, once said in his inaugural address to the american public more than 40 years ago, "Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty." america is willing to wage war, incurring the wrath of the UN in the process, to protect its citizens from terrorism. yet it is unwilling to go against its own courts to prolong the life of one of its own. laws are made by men, and thus it may be changed. life, i believe, is created by a higher being. it is not recoverable, once its gone. in the words of the governor of Florida, Jeb Bush, after a Florida state judge denied a petition by him to take Terri Schiavo into state custody, "I cannot violate a court order. I don't have powers from the US Constitution or - from that matter from the Florida Constitution - that would allow me to intervene after a decision has been made." bullshit i say. state and presidential pardons exist in america, that allow convicted murderers to escape death row. don't they violate the original court order that they must be executed too? its a farce. in the words of House Majority Leader, Tom DeLay, a Texan Republican, "This loss happened because our legal system did not protect the people who need protection most, and that will change. The time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior, but not today. Today we grieve, we pray, and we hope to God this fate never befalls another." on the day Terri passed away, President Bush said, "The essence of civilization is that the strong have a duty to protect the weak. In cases where there are serious doubts and questions, the presumption should be in favor of life." yes, life. the one thing above all that should be cherished and protected. in memory of Terri Schiavo, December 3, 1963 - March 31, 2005.
